Talking of my entire three years, I had a really good & educational time studying here. In my opinion, there could be more practical/ technical lessons offered possibly in place of some theory- as I do feel there's possibly more of a lean towards theoretical to practical. The practical modules were also often in the form of short films, to have set outcomes such as 'make a documentary', 'make a film with a 5-point story arc that doesn't last longer than 3 minutes', etc. could be good challenges that bring out the best problem-solving abilities from students. It could be argued there was already room for students to do that themselves within the modules, but speaking observationally, it seemed a lot of classmates perhaps lacked the initiative/ creativity. If this was forced out of them, it could leave them with a stronger foundation. Since leaving, I've also found gaps in my knowledge in terms of technical skill, for instance my knowledge on lenses, lighting techniques & detailed audio editing isn't great. The potential for opportunity to learn these things was here in the form of work experience, however these sessions often didn't have a focus and was more about completing something from the office's workload backlog. There was a lot of potential in place that could definitely be expanded on, but with that said the course provided the opportunity to learn for ourselves, gain work experience & to network by bringing in external talent such as actors, and work with students studying courses that tie in relevantly to this one, such as scriptwriting. It also taught us the foundations of approaching clients, creative development (towards projects & our own knowledge) and more. A lot of opportunity was here, that could be expanded on more is what I'd say overall.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
UCG weren't short of resources, but were short of quality resources, due to lack of funding. Good computer models & good video equipment, including audio recording devices, lighting ,etc., were all provided. All could be better, the computers especially often taking some time to load certain features & were easy to overwhelm. The video equipment I personally think was relatively suitable given our experience level, however some stronger, more recent gear would be incredibly beneficial in putting together an aesthetically-pleasing showreel. With that said though, what is present at UCG in terms of gear got all of us through the course with decent- very good marks, but could do with an update probably.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
UCG was brilliant in this regard especially, all the tutors I interacted with did have a genuine care for their students' well-being, physically & mentally. If they detected somebody had an issue, they'd always be reasonable & do what they could. In addition, the University itself provided a 'councillor' of sorts, that sessions were usually available with, in order to help manage stress or extraneous variables. UCG promoted and supported both BAME groups & LGBT groups too.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
My course took place predominantly pre-COVID at UCG. Most of my lectures were done in person, with a lot of clarity and illustration to help us learn. The resources in the classroom were great too, making learning, taking notes & research all very easy. Hours per week were ample & tutors were always available to email. Over the three years, we had sessions led by a number of different tutors, some of which were a lot more respondent, knowledgeable & helpful than others, but all were supportive.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
13
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
I've voted a three star because whilst the university may have provided these opportunities, I haven't been so proactive in seeking out potential opportunities that could have been advertised- so my answer can't really be fair all in all. They definitely did have guest speakers, I recall multiple guests coming in to provide talks, Q&As, etc. Which was good & beneficial.
Do you think your time at university this year has been value for money?
