OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
Harper Adams University has been the best year of my life. I adore my life and everyone new I have met within it. Harper gave me the opportunity to start a fresh life with people who all have the same mindset as myself and who are in the same situation. My life is nothing but improved thanks to Harper Adams, I am looking forward to my next 3 years and the future it will give me.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Harper Adams does so much for employability, hence why it has 99.4% employability for all graduates. Harper courses all consist of a sandwich year which is fully supported by the university, we have a dedicated module to Placement and Harper have a full list of possible placements whilst also dedicating each person a placement officer who assists with everything from applying to those offered and finding your own placement. Harper regularly also has guest lecturers and the harper forum which all assist in being able to get a different aspect of the working world assisting in students knowledge as to whether the want to do that job or not. regular jobs fairs and placement fairs also take place with Harper having a strong link with many important, influential companies. Where transferable skills are concerned Harper runs two modules in first year which cover personal and academic development focusing on things such as CV's, covering letters, job applications, assignment writing and referencing.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
My course is open and welcoming with students from an eclectic range of backgrounds, meaning many viewpoints are seen. Tutors and lecturers are also of an eclectic mix meaning students get to learn many different opinions to then form their own. Tutors are helpful and have an open door policy. No student is a number or a statistic, every student at Harper Adams is known by name to every tutor they have, making everything so much more easier to learn. Personally my class sizes are no more than 30, meaning student/tutor ratio is low and teaching standards are high. All modules are relevant and regularly updated to ensure that all taught information is current and necessary.
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Our students union is fantastic, they put on amazing weekly events, with something for everyone on every night. I am not member of the executive team for the SU but I am a captain of a sport club (run through the SU) and a regular visitor to the bar. The bar is a little run down, but nobody cares about that when the music is good and the lights are down low. there is regularly guest acts coming to play at harper and often these are some of the biggest out there at the moment.
Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
In first year I lived in university halls on campus and they were amazing, really social, but with enough space to ourselves. They were clean and tidy with nothing broken and cleaners in every day. being on campus was so useful for ensuring I got to lectures on time in first year. Most people had a car, of which there was substantia parking for. This year I live in a student house off-campus with people I met through halls last year, the house is brilliant, spacious with off road parking and a garden. Everything works fantastically and the Land lady is lovely.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Harper Adams has EVERYTHING you could ever want, from a gym to a farm. There is basically nothing you cant do. The library is extensive and has access to every resource required, if they don't have a book or paper they will be sure to get it in for you. Harper has a good wifi network also with laptops available for most classrooms if students don't bring theirs, but also a large amount of computer rooms also.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Harper doesn't have a city, it is a rural campus with a local town, Newport. Newport is fun and has everything you need there. When going on a night out you can be sure to never spend over £20 including taxis and never loose your friends. Its small and cosy with many pubs and one club, perfect for a pub crawl! Telford is the local shopping centre and there is all the high street stores, Nandos, bowling, ice skating and a cinema.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Clubs and Societies are the heart of Harper Adams! There are so many to choose from each offering something different. Execs are friendly and helpful often becoming close friends and mentors. C&S compete nationally in the same BUCS leagues as all the big universities with fantastic home facilities. Harper C&S also regularly put on trips and events where other clubs are welcomed.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Tutors have an open door policy, where you can just sign up and have a meeting, every tutor has this including the Vice-Chancellor. Tutors are very good at feedback, with assignments always coming back within the designated time with a necessary amount of feedback. Tutors also offer pre-hand in workshops and revision workshops. Academic guidance is available from designated people not just tutors. Harper has a strong counselling network which is open to all students.
