University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I did my undergraduate degree at Lancaster too, and loved it. So far at postgraduate level, I am really enjoying the course and the university life again. If I've had any problems with any aspect of academic or personal life, there are people available on campus to offer help and support, which really offers peace of mind!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
With the exception of lack of study spaces during exam time, I think the university offers a wide and varied range of services for all students, which is a very good thing.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Academic support id generally very good, tutors/lecturers are available via email and have office hours so students can go and see them if they are struggling with something specific. Feedback on courseworks is generally detailed; full feedback is given within 4 weeks of submission.
The counselling services offered are average, could maybe do with some improvement in terms of availability of counsellors.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
I think the students' union are very effective at dealing with any issues a student may have, and they are on hand to support you with whatever you may be struggling with.
I have previously been involved during my undergraduate degree, however I don't think I could manage the extra time commitment at postgraduate level.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Lancaster itself is quite a small city, and normally there's not too much going on, however during events such as the Music Festival, the atmosphere was incredible, the city was bustling. Generally, its a relatively quiet place.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Lancaster offers over 200 clubs and societies so there really is something for everyone. The majority of sports clubs welcome people of all abilities so if a student is looking to try something new, they will most likely be welcomed into a club. the societies are typically well funded and offer regular meetings/training sessions.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I like the style of teaching and how, in a couple of modules, you get to tailor you r readings and assignments to your interests, which means everyone enjoys the course and gets the most out of it.
I don't particularly enjoy the lack of contact hours, however staff are always happy to further discuss topics if required.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
6
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The careers service offers lots of workshops on boosting employability and offers the Lancaster Award which incorporates lots of essential skills to improve your chances of getting a job either once you graduate or whilst studying. The careers team offers mock interviews, CV workshops, help with application forms etc through drop in sessions, and frequently organises careers fair and networking events to meet potential employers.
