University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
My overall experience at university so far (2nd year) has been outstanding, and I truly think that students that decide to take other paths (such as apprenticeship) are missing out on an incredibly formulating experience which will positively shape the rest of their life. I would recommend the university experience, and especially Northumbria and my course, to any student who is deciding what to do post-A-levels.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The facilities at the university are fantastic, and with more development coming all the time, they are only getting better. I wish my course had a proper dedicated space inside the Business School rather than at the Northern Design Centre, but that's more a personal thing than an actual issue.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Academic support is open and available to all students and made well-known, so I cannot fault this. Having had experience with the personal support offered by the uni, I can honestly say that it feels like they really care about the welfare and future of their students, and that I feel valued and respected by the university and their staff.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
As the President of NUOVO, I find that the SU gives a lot of great help to societies and their members, and they really elevate us to reach the next level, wherever we are at. As a member of my course though, the SU can prove very difficult to work with, especially when trying to organise an event. I wish there was more clarity from the SU with exactly what the process is when a group of students wish to hold an event or sell a product to students - the information I've received in the past has been very confusing and unhelpful at times.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The city life in Newcastle is better for a student than anywhere else I've been. Both the day and night-life are vibrant and perfect for a student to live in.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Northumbria has a wide range of clubs and societies that are affordable and available to join, for any interest you may have. From my experience of societies (Poker and NUOVO) I have had a fantastic experience and would tell any new student to get involved in any societies that appeal to them - you won't regret it!
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The EBM course is taught in a standard manner for a small course (through module sessions), but the environment that promotes collaboration and teamwork is fantastic. I like the one-to-one contact time with tutors the most. I like the assessment spread the least - the timing clashes of several assignments can be awkward to manage.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
8
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Through my course (EBM), the enterprise team and societies, I have developed a great deal outside of course time, so I think that the uni does a great job of increasing the employability of its students.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Very basic, but does everything that you need it to do (Lovaine Flats). It's good that a budget option is offered in student halls for those who want to save money, such as myself.
