OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
To date, I have loved every minute at UUC. It is definitely a unique university. Friends have moved to it from Queens and larger institutions because of its smaller size, the personal time lecturers invest in students and its overall pastoral care. I understand how daunting higher education can be - especially if you are leaving home for the first time aged 18 or 19. Yet, I have only found it to be a place of not just academic excellence, but of warmth and compassion. It might be part of Northern Ireland's largest university, but Coleraine is a warm and friendly place to learn, where you feel for the first time that you are working to benefit yourself rather than just the robotic dictums of a faceless institution. Being situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the world doesn't hurt either.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
They constantly encourage us to participate in Edge accredited activities, placements and part time work. I want to teach and every year there is the opportunity to volunteer at local schools, which not only provides you with essential experience but also helps you network and meet potential future employers.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The best thing is their enthusiasm and determination to see you do well. Until attending Coleraine I had never met teachers, who displayed a personal stake in your success. If you are struggling at any point they make it quite clear they are availableto help.
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The Students Union, and in particular, the class reps, is an essential first leg of the support process at Coleraine. The Union is our voice and of course a great source of entertainment.
Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Penthouse flat overlooking the railway station and beach beyond. Well equipped, spacious and ten minutes on the train takes me straight to the university halt.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
We don't have a separate bar or study room anymore so that's not just as good. Also, the university is run more like a business now so facilities like the gym, access to eye tests and glasses, food outlets and even coffee is often more expensive on site than in the town centre, where students are often offered discount. Library facilities are excellent though.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Since the Coleraine campus isn't situated in a city but in a nest of three towns on the North Coast, it is the best place to live. None of the pollution and noise of the city with high quality accommodation, beautiful beaches and great night life. When the summer comes, there are so many wonderful opportunities for working the two seaside towns of Portrush and Portstewart, the former of which has a direct rail link to the cities of Londonderry and Belfast.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Spoilt for choice with everything from a Rowing Club (on the same river which boasts two Olympic gold medalist) to a Poetry Society. Every year at Fresher's Fair they all set out their stalls and choice is quite staggering for a small university.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
This is where Coleraine excels. I fell in semester two of first year and was apprehensive about coming back. However Student Support and my Tutors pulled out all the stops to make sure I was able to resume my studies. They didn't wait until I came back either, from the moment I left, they swung into action, form filling, staying in constant touch and making sure everything was in place for me to pick up where I left off. Even then the support and extra help continued. I cannot praise them highly enough. Attending Coleraine University was the best decision I ever made. It's like a family and they look after their own.
