OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
The course has been intense in the type of work needing to produce, and more so frustrating when lecturers have not been constructive or supportive. But the university as a whole is supportive, particularly the counsellors and SEND tutors.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
There are always leaflets, and often visiting guest speakers on the course, as well as student career fairs to help students realise the local companies and areas of focus that can be undertaken. Furthermore, the students’ union has created a Facebook page to help raise any issues about career and job prospects. This has been a huge help to promote advice about CVs and interview skills, and how to use past or current jobs to demonstrate transferrable skills.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The best thing about the course is how broad it is, but also allows each student to take the topics from their own level of interest.
The worst thing is that the way assessments are addressed are not helping to develop key skills at a masters level.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
8
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The range of societies to join is brilliant - such as salsa dancing, which is not something that is offered at many Universities.
Additionally, the union are always there to give support with anything, which is really reassuring, as I panic a lot.
The bar and food is basic enough, and having a Starbucks outside of the bar/main room is good, as it means that people can meet up and have a good chat without too many people around and without the noise of the TV.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Campus is spread out a bit, but the library is brilliant, with lots of printers and places to study depending on whether you want to work individually, as a group, silently or casual reading. The library is right next to the students union, and a co-op (as part of the SU), which has proved useful for many different reasons.
The gym and the Disability Support building are just opposite the SU, which makes all of the help and stress management near by to each other.
The buses run regularly and stop off along the main route across Portsmouth to the uni, which is really helpful, particularly when there are lots of library books to carry. This has been particularly useful, since my course is book heavy. - so much easier than Plymouth uni, which does not have a bus.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
There are lots of main shops around the city’s centre, but there is also Gunwharf Quays which is brilliant to have for extra quality and different types of things from shops that would not normally be close by, or at such a discounted price.
The clubs are dotted around the city, either in the main centre or at Gunwharf, which can be an issue when they are a good 15 minute walk (at a medium-fast pace). But there is a taxi rank (as well as a main bus stop depot area) at Gunwharf, which is useful since Gunwharf is at the bottom of the city - but this is only helpful if one has money!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are lots of different clubs and societies, particularly ones that are not usually available at universities, such as salsa dancing.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Lecturers feedback has been mixed and not marked fairly. Lecturers have used an online marking system that does not allow to be very constructive with their feedback; the feedback has been short and extremely negative - as mentioned by my peers, too.
The support from counselling has been really welcoming and helpful, as there is such a positive and calming vibe both in the waiting room and when with the counsellor.
