I was very happy with my choice of Exeter and I had a great time there during my undergrad. I think the academic quality could however be improved as sometimes I got a feel professors were more focused on their research than on teaching, with a few exceptions, or the course was not particularly challenging at times, and some topics were covered a bit too lightly. However, overall I gained a lot from studying at Exeter and I would highly recommend it.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
University facilities are excellent. Most buildings are new or have been refurbished and the library is a great place to study
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
There is a vast range of support provided by the university. I never used counselling but I made use of academic support widely. Tutors were always happy to help but feedback was limited because my course did not involve evaluated coursework but only exams
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The student union in Exeter is very active and organised many relevant events. I didn’t personally get involved because I was more focused on the academic side, but I tried to go to their events.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Exeter is a small city but has an ideal dimension at least for undergraduate students. Most things are only a few minutes walk and there is plenty to do on nights out or even for more chilled evenings
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are a great number of societies in Exeter, catering for almost all possible interests. I was a member of enactus and of athletics, and found these societies to be very welcoming but also very focused on their objectives and activities
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
My course was not very large which meant I was closely followed by professors and tutors. However, in large compulsory courses that were taken by all economics students, tutor to student ratios were high. In addition, tutorials were not very active because many students did not do their homework before participating in them. I think this was the fault of the setup of the course. If students had to submit their homework before the class, they would have come more prepared and the classes would have been more interesting.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
15
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The careers zone was very active and provided lots of information on employability skills, as well as one to one sessions to focus on skills and areas to improve given the particular career the student wanted to undertake. One particularly useful thing organised by the career zone was the mentor scheme, which connected students with alumni of the university with experience in the field of interest to the student.
