I think York is a beautiful place and the campus reflects that. The diversity and atmosphere of so many places at the uni is astonishing and it really is an incredibly welcoming safe space. I think it would be nice to have more options for accessibility, the dog park for example is really small and paved and isn’t ideal for students with guide dogs.

While we have a room for our writing and so many options for tutor contact, the content we learn and the way it’s taught is incredibly 50/50. Some tutors are fantastic and helpful but some treat the course like a how-to for their own personal preferences and it can leave things feeling like you’re out of the loop.

You’re given a lovely little welcome package, and maintenance is always dealt with as quickly as possible. The facilities and rooms themselves are lovely and perfect to make your own, but people are often obnoxiously loud and you can’t do much for it.

York is a lovely place to live and study. The city has so many historical sites and places to visit and explore. York St John University is a friendly , welcoming place. The tutor’s are professional, approachable and generally pretty good company, making subjects very interesting when teaching. There are some drop in events for mature students like myself but unfortunately these are on on a day that I cannot attend so maybe alternatively dates would help to include everyone who would like to attend these. I have been very pleased so far though with the University experience.

Best aspects: reading and studying books and creative writing, plus practicing writing techniques. Learning about history and other genres that I may otherwise not reach for. Worst bits: I haven’t really found any yet. Being a bit older it takes some adjusting to a younger environment on the whole but I’m comfortable with young people having children of a similar age. Being accepted as an older student is still important. Saying that , the majority of the students that I am studying with are great and I’m feeling less conscious of any age gap. After all we are all there for pretty much the same reasons.
