As an international student, I had an excellent experience that I would highly recommend to others considering studying in the UK. In my postgraduate town planning program, classes are held twice per week on campus, typically Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 4 pm. This in-person intensive learning has provided an engaging educational experience. Each Tuesday and Friday is dedicated to a different core module. Over the 15 months, I take courses like Urban Design, Planning Implementation, Planning Principles and Concepts, Housing and Planning, and Sustainability and Environmental Management. The full-day lessons provide in-depth knowledge on each specialised topic. Class days have a mix of traditional lectures, student-led presentations, small group discussions, and practical planning exercises. For instance, in my Urban Design course, we work in teams on a site redevelopment project for a local neighbourhood, creating drawings and models to apply our learning. The lecturers in the program have extensive professional expertise in their module topics, which brings a real-world perspective. They also make themselves available outside of class hours for one-on-one consultations and feedback. I meet with my lecturers frequently during their office hours if I need help understanding theories or concepts covered in class. While most learning is done through the intensive in-person Tuesdays and Thursdays, we also utilise online tools. Lecturers upload supplemental video lectures, readings, discussion forums and assignments to help cement our knowledge. However, the face-to-face lessons are the core. With this blended approach of specialised in-person classes plus online support, I am gaining expert knowledge and practical town planning skills. I am confident this Master's program will equip me for a career in improving communities through insightful urban design and sustainable development.
