My experience at Birmingham City University has been incredible, from moving to a new city - moving away from home for the first time and to dealing with an intense personal journal regarding my health, the support I've received along the way has been life-changing! (Cheesy but true!)
Everyone I've been taught by has been fantastic, and I've worked in multiple departments within the University. A superb campus (especially the new Parkside buildings) with being offered incredible opportunities to work at global media companies, national companies and the chance to work with industry experts.
I graduated with First Class Honours in September - something that seemed very out of reach when I was struggling with personal issues last year, the staff pushed me along, supported me and the facilities kept me going! Thanks BCU!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Fantastic facilities (especially for a media student in the new Parkside building!)
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Student Support at Birmingham City University has certainly, 100% helped me. At the start of my first year I was diagnosed with something that I was really struggling with and had a huge impact on my studies - Student Services health and wellbeing team help me with emotional support, as well as ensuring my faculty were aware of my needs. Also ensuring that I had sufficient time and support to complete my work.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
My experience with the student union has been varied, as I didn't really take full advantage of it until my third year. However, the staff are exceptionally friendly! (Each and every one of them!) And the societies, etc. are fantastic!
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Moving from an Island to a city was interesting, and very daunting. But Birmingham is great, and I love it now! Moving from Perry Barr to the City Centre was certainly a bonus!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Scratch Media is fantastic, and the Harry Potter society is awesome ;)
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I had some issues with my course as I chose the wrong modules (but that was my own fault.) Once I'd changed these modules the course was fantastic - the support form the lecturers was great.
When a lecturer was unavailable or feedback was missing they worked tirelessly to ensure I received what I needed.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
I have worked in numerous departments at the University as student staff. Such as Student Ambassador, Student Rep, Media Rep, School Rep, Marketing and Communications Assistant, Student Copywriter, Research team support, Media Ambassador, Admissions assistant and various volunteering opportunities.
Also, the staff within my department put me in contact with several industry professionals which was great!
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I lived in hall sin my first year and it was a blast - accommodation services were quick to fix anything that needed fixing, and security were fabulous. The only downside was not being able to stay over the summer.
