It’s been good!
1st year was interesting as I didn’t really like my housemates, but it’s just a case of pot luck. It’s been great to be in such a positive environment learning what I love! And I wish pushed myself more into societies but I just get super intimidated by groups of people.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
They are good, particularly for sports. But I feel the lecture halls are very bad (Spring Lane Building is beautiful). The library is good, however can be hard to get space when needed, and there are some computers available. Spring lane building is the highlight of the uni when it comes to my course, otherwise I wouldn’t say they are amazing
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Tutors and supervisors exist, but mine isn’t particularly the greatest. He only tends to deal with sociology, so if I have issues in the politics or social policy departments I get a bit stuck.
If I need help going through things, the office hours I have been too have been really helpful, however they can often clash with the timetables (mainly because of SPS being interdisciplinary).
Feedback from essays vary a lot, and I really wish we went through out 1st year exams question by questions and had it explained in a reflective way what the marker was looking for, so going into second year I know what they want the exams to look like because I just don’t know still! I feel mock exams in January would have been helpful in first year, would have helped us find our feet.
Personal support, It also exists and I think the additional funding out towards mental health services in the uni is realy needed, but I am still not 100% sure how I would go about accessing them, and it’s not something I have the time to research in detail when it comes to having a period of bad mental health, dealing with the problems that cause it and my degree. The information need to be more readily available
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Student representation systems is really good, it’s just a case of the lack of students getting involved which is the problem.
The chance is there to have yoursay, get involved, and be present in student union choices and decisions, but very few students do due to the stigmatisation around the SU, which is a real shame.
The facilities aren’t that good for the SU day to day which is why they are looking into a new building. However, the student bars are fantastic, and different bar to bar! There’s always a really good atmosphere and great service.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
York is fantastic for this, there’s accommodation all around the uni, in all shapes and forms. The University is super easy to get in and out of town with the bus route, and once you find your way depending where you are coming from it can be a 25 min walk to town.
It’s a bit of a shame the shop on campus (Nisa) is so expensive, if it was Coop at least there would be a reward scheme to save money. But it’s not too much of a problem if you live off campus as there is plenty of small branded shops knocking about.
There are doctors surgery’s all around the campus area, train station is easy to get to via the bus routes as well!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There is such a big variety, something for everyone. It’s just a case of being confident enough to throw yourself into new groups of people (which I struggle with). It’s just finding societies that work for you!
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I like the variety in the course, but I feel we should have gotten to choose which departments research course we took. I do really like the SPS forums, it’s a really good opportunity to meet others on our course and tie it all in.
It’s a bit annoying the SPS handbook doesn’t give us information for formatting of assessments in the Sociology, politics and social policy departments as it is something we can’t access online.
I feel that the choice to weight your degree a little bit to certain disciplines is also really good
How many contact hours per week do you have?
8
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
York has the Strengths programme which encourages students to build on our weaknesses for employability. As well they did civil service trips which for my course was super useful and engaging!
As for the course, I guess the research modules give us skills to transfer, as well as some assessments which involve presentation, organisation of information ect...
