The best aspects of the University of Leeds would be that the commitment teachers and tutors have towards their students is like no other I have experienced. We are well looked after, being offered additional support and are also given the opportunity to share what isn’t going so well so they can work on this. I haven’t struggled to make friends and meet new people, as there are numerous opportunities available to us through the accommodations and the union. I have been participating in Leeds Student Radio, which has massively boosted my confidence, and helped to begin my career in radio! Being an autistic student, there are support systems in place, and my personal tutor has really helped me to overcome some of those barriers that I have struggled with. The only downside would be that one module hasn’t been the greatest, we became confused with the reading materials and it impacted us a lot as a group. However, we have raised this concern with the module leaders and action is being taken.

The main body of first year has been fantastic! As I am within a practical course, I love the “getting out there” elements with interviewing the public and adapting my work to suit my personality. The contact with lecturers sometimes feels minimal, however we always receive a reply. For one module we were sent an email each week highlighting what to do for each day, this was incredibly helpful! We have had a range of lecturers for one module, experiencing a range of blended learning when lecturers couldn’t attend. I did find this difficult as my attention wasn’t focused during the online sessions, but through the online platform Minerva I was able to go over my notes.

The accommodation is brilliant. It’s such a good price and this was important to me when selecting a university hall. The staff do their very best to host events for us to attend, one of my favorites being the meet and greet at the bbq area for freshers week! I met some of my best friends there. The site team are really friendly and always aim to help no matter what the problem is, I feel really safe there. My flat had some problems with the ways things were when we moved in, however after seeking support the main supervisor held a meeting with myself so I could raise any concerns. Overall a lovely place to live and brilliant for those looking for a cost effective area with lots of amenities close by.
