University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I'm a current first year, and after spending 2 terms here I've really quite enjoyed it. The campus is beautiful and green. The university has loads of student facilities. The lecturers are great. The course is interesting. You won't be disappointed. The types of people we get here can be a bit annoying though, and if it wasn't for the international students, Exeter would not be very diverse. If you come from the South East, namely Surrey or Kent, you'll fit right in. I know about 4 northerners, and they seem to be surviving pretty well. The upper middle class, red trousered, waitrose shopping toffs you learn to hate are only really found in classics, philosophy, PPE etc. so they're not really a problem, but Exeter/Exetahh does have a bit of a stereotype because of them. Honestly though, they won't affect your university experience, they'll just annoy you slightly. In conclusion, come to Exeter, it's GREAT!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Library has all the books and computers you need. It's very efficient and modern looking, no problem for me really, although they could do with more books (my previous statement was referring to types and genres).
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
There is A LOT of student support. There's the fantastic career centre, who will deal with pretty much anything and everything, the student health centre is great and efficient, the wellbeing centre is apparently great too (they are improving waiting times).
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
In terms of facilities they're great, there's the RAM bar, which can get crowded at times, but they run a great pub quiz on a monday. Devonshire house is packed with useful things, including a campus cinema on a sunday. The Guild, as they're known, are pretty democratic, in fact we are the most democratic uni, but there's a little bit of bureaucracy here and there. The student ideas system runs really well and enables students to get their voices heard.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
2 things:
Night Life:
Exeter has 3 decent clubs, Timepiece, Arena, Mosaic. Although Exeter's nightclub is not exactly London's, there is a night out for everybody, any night of the week, and to be honest, I wouldn't know the difference, everybody enjoys it, everybody has a good time, you'll have a great time I guarantee it (also the yik yak game here is excellent). The uni has its own nightclub (The lemongrove/lemmy) but it's a bit pants.
General daytime city life:
Exeter is abundant with your typical shops, and many independent ones too. You won't be disappointed. The quay is lovely, so is cathedral green. The city is very historic in general really, there are loads of quirky little places to go e.g. Gandy Street (where JK Rowling based Diagon Alley on). Also, why stop at the city? Exeter is right next-door to beautiful english countryside, I've been on loads of walks and bike rides all around the Exe Valley, and beyond, all the way down to sunny Exmouth (there's a huge beach there).
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There's every sport you can think of.
Music is great. As a musician who didn't want to study music, Exeter has completely fulfilled my needs. There's a society for pretty much any type you can think of. Big Band is great, EUJO is great, EUSO is great, EUCB (concert band is great), there's a whole range of A Capella (who win national awards and perform at the Edinburgh Fringe), it's honestly the best part of being at this university, other than my degree.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I study biological sciences, and on the whole the lecturers are really enthusiastic and passionate about their subjects. The modules are interesting and personally I really enjoy it, but it depends on the person.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
I'll wait and find out.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I'm staying in Mardon Hall in my first year, I could not ask for anything better. There is a real sense of community, there are loads of socials, there's a table tennis table, flatscreen TV (we play PS2 and watch films on it), there's a LIBRARY with a piano, it's pretty awesome. Holland Hall is full of the people you expect to come to Exeter, they're either from Guildford of Cheltenham, they wear red trousers, most of them are quite arrogant and up themselves, sorry for the rant. All of the other accommodation I've seen, or been to looks quite nice and I'm sure it'll suit you no matter what, just make sure you live with the right people.
