I can’t really speak on behalf of any course besides my own but I’ll try my best to at least sum up some things semi-coherently. More than anything, I think that our lecturers are mainly the best aspect of our course. They are people that genuinely care about what they’re doing, many of which have years of experience in the animation industry and there’s a lot to learn and take from them. Again, that is a very subjective thing but at least in terms of my experiences, they’re people that I’ve come to really look up to and admire both as artists and as teachers. The feedback and the lessons you will receive will really aid you in becoming both a better animator and a better artist. At least in my case anyway. Additionally, the facilities specifically for art students are great and in terms of animation, there’s a wide array of equipment in great conditions. Besides that, the Grove (the building for art majors) houses a multitude of different studios and workshops that can often be used even by the animation students such as recording booths, rooms specifically set up for stop motion, laser cutters, wood cutters etc. Some of these I’ve only really been shown how to use with the assistance of staff members but haven’t quite needed myself yet. It’s still really neat having the chance to use such a large variety of equipment that not only applies to my major but that of other art students as well. I feel like there’s things that could definitely use some improvement and for the most part that lies with things mostly outside my course. Yes, BA Animation is a demanding course that piles on a lot of work but that’s not something I’d necessarily describe as needing to be changed or improved. I think it’s more so technical things like how long it can take to get a chance to speak with Unihelp (essentially the people that help answer student questions or in general assist them) or the fact that maintenance in certain parts of the college building could use some work, with one example being one of our classrooms which currently has ventilation problems that haven’t really been sorted in weeks. Overall I do have mainly positive things to say at least towards my experiences as a student and while I’m really happy with my choice to study at Middlesex, I’d like to point out once again that I’m an art student and most of my lessons take place in buildings besides the main college one so I can’t exactly be a good judge of any of the other courses. I’ve been in the college building enough to still see that the facilities are in good condition albeit perhaps a little older than the Grove but that’s besides the point. I do hope that this somewhat helped though.

I kind of accidentally answered a lot of this in the previous question so I wouldn’t exactly like to repeat everything I just said but I will echo my sentiments that BA Animation is a demanding but rewarding course. All of our lessons take place on campus, unless there’s a need for online lessons instead. Besides that, the lecturers are really genuine about what they do and as I mentioned before, many of them have years of experience in the animation industry and their feedback and comments are quite valuable. On top of that, they’re just really sweet people that I’ve come to look up to and admire and there’s a lot to learn from them. Additionally, there are somewhat regular tutorials either one on one or in a group that help both shape your ideas in projects and get a grip on things in the course that might confuse you etc. I think the worst aspect of it would be the stress that comes with the course. There’s a heavy load of work to do, sometimes there might be three separate projects happening at the same time, at different degrees of importance and difficulty but ultimately for it all has been worth it. Managing your time is hard and almost all of us have a difficult time getting used to it but I think knowing how the animation industry works, having to take on so much in such little time is sometimes a necessary ‘evil’. I think however that that’s the one negative aspect of my course that comes to mind. I really am quite pleased with both my choice to pursue animation specifically at Middlesex and with the way the course is being treated by the staff. Also, to add onto that (even though I mentioned it in my previous comments about uni so I’ll sum up quickly), the facilities and equipment for animation students are top-notch and in great condition. That’s mostly it. :) I really do recommend this course for anyone interested in going into animation.

I have very mixed feeling about my uni accommodation this year. On one hand, the facilities are quite nice, the standard rooms are relatively small but basically have the size of a basic student dorm and thankfully have their own en-suite bathrooms. So in terms of my own room, I am quite happy. There’s a lot of storage space under the bed and in the wardrobe, shelves and cupboards, the bathroom is small but that’s not really a problem since it also doesn’t take up much of the already small main room. Also I keep repeating the word small and it is but it is still large enough for a single person to live in it comfortably. Now in terms of the whole flat, you share a kitchen with up to 10 other people. Unfortunately, however, I was unlucky and ended up having to live with a few people that refused to clean after themselves in the kitchen. The kitchen itself is large and quite modern and new but again, how nice and usable it is can all depend on who your flatmates are as well. Ultimately I think it’s one of the nicer student accommodations out of the ones that Middlesex has partnered with but it is rather expensive and there are regularly things that are broken but takes weeks to be fixed. On top of that, be prepared to spend half your time trying to find an empty or working washing machine and dryer because this building of 18 floors only has maybe 15ish machines each. One last comment to make is the frequency of fire alarms. The only alarms that work as a test happen on Wednesdays but besides those ones, you’re probably going to get accustomed to hearing a fire alarm out of nowhere at any random moment. Most of the time, they’re not even blaring for an actual fire. I know I’ve been unbelievably negative towards Unit Students (Wembley) and there are definitely a lot of pros to choosing this accommodation over the others, one of which being security and somewhat better rooms, plus the communal area that is usually in good condition unless someone decides that they need to trash it instead. Make of that what you will. I’m sure there are loads of people living here that have both worse and better things to say about these halls and that also has to do, once again, with who your flatmates are because ultimately that’s the one thing you can’t control. I hope that this helped a bit though.
