How will your importer and exporter career progress?

The size of your employer, along with their geographic or industry focus, will often shape your career pathway.

You might start with a graduate scheme or in an entry-level logistics and transport role. Working for a company with its own logistics department may offer fewer promotion options compared to third-party logistics (3PL) companies. With experience, you could progress to senior freight forwarder or export administration roles.

Self-employment is possible with strong experience, allowing you to work as a consultant for different clients.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Graduate training schemes are a good way to start in the sector and are offered by larger companies or firms. On-the-job training will be more important in smaller companies.

Various certificates and qualifications are available through the CILT, which can lead to chartership. A recognised degree and significant experience are usually needed to get chartered.

Foreign languages are often a valued skill in this field and will open up professional opportunities.
