How will your flight engineer career progress?

Generally, career development will depend on getting lots of experience on different types of aircraft. You might start out as a junior engineer before being promoted into a senior engineering position. You might then decide to specialise in an area like propulsion or avionics.

Self-employment opportunities are rare, but if you work toward chartered status, you may be able to work on a consultancy basis.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Lots of your learning as a flight engineer will be on the job. After uni, you could join a graduate training scheme which will provide a significant amount of your early professional development. Wherever you work, your employers will give you extensive training on pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight safety procedures.

Professional organisations you could join include the Engineering Council, the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IME) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).
