How will your vehicle technician, mechanic or electrician career progress?

Your progress in this career is often based on your experience or the type of employer that you work for.

You’ll usually start your career as an entry-level mechanic or assistant, often under the supervision of a more experienced mentor. Depending on your employer you might decide to specialise in areas like commercial vehicles or electric vehicles, for example. With experience you might become a manager of a garage or facility, especially in larger organisations like the armed forces, or car retailers.

As an experienced mechanic with business skills, you could decide to set up a garage or automotive business.

What opportunities are there for career development?

There’s no set path for career development in this field, so you’ll need to be proactive in growing your skills. Much of your learning will be on the job, where you’ll learn about different vehicle parts, tools and repair processes. Larger employers may offer structured training specific to their business practices or equipment.

With experience and further training, you might decide to specialise in certain processes like breakdown repairs or MOT testing, or areas like motorsport engineering or electric cars.

Professional organisations you could join include the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
