How will your garage manager or proprietor career progress?

Your career progression will normally depend on your experience and the employers that you work for.

You’ll typically start in this field as a vehicle mechanic or technician. With experience and training, you’ll then be promoted into a supervisor or management role. You might decide to specialise in areas such as motor sport, electric vehicles or heavy commercial vehicles. Working in large organisations such as the armed forces, logistics companies or car retailers will usually provide more management-level opportunities.

With experience and the financial means, you might decide to start your own garage or automotive business.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Much of your learning will be done on the job, as there’s no set path for career development. You’ll need to keep up to date with new technologies and vehicle equipment.

Employers like the emergency services or military will usually provide structured in-house training, building your knowledge of management practices and regulations specific to that organisation.

Professional organisations you could join include the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). The IMI provides training opportunities and courses in areas such as workshop management.
