How will your special needs education teaching professional career progress?

Career development as a special needs teacher may focus on a certain institution or type of teaching or support.

Many special educational needs (SEN) teachers will work as general teachers first. You’ll train in SEN education and support SEN students through an external training institution, local authority or through your school. With experience you could train further and work as a SEN coordinator, department head or subject coordinator in a SEN school.

Self-employment is possible for experienced SEN teachers, usually working as private tutors with families or on contract with different schools.

What opportunities are there for career development?

You’ll be encouraged to access training throughout your career, with training and workshops available through local authorities, regional and national teacher training centres, and dedicated training companies.

Postgraduate education or graduate training in certain areas of SEN will help you gain the skills needed to work with students of different kinds, such as those with sensory impairments.
