How will your marketing or sales director career progress?

You’re only likely to be employed as a sales or marketing director if you have a lot of experience in sales and/or marketing.

You’ll probably get an entry-level position as a sales or marketing executive before working your way into management and then senior management. This is usually a long process but you’ll often find that promotions can be found externally, as well as internally.

There will be self-employment opportunities once you have good experience, as you’ll have picked up several of the skills needed to start your own business or venture.

What opportunities are there for career development?

There are specialist courses run by professional bodies that give training to help you get the skills you need.

Other training and development opportunities include in-house courses and specialist seminars and conferences.

Professional organisations you could join include the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Institute of Data and Marketing and the Institute of Sales Professionals. These bodies can help you gain professional recognition and training.
