How will your conference and exhibition manager or organiser career progress?

Conference and exhibition management is a competitive field and career progression depends on a few factors, such as how quickly you develop skills and how well you build a good network of contacts.

At the start of your career, you may hold an assistant post before being promoted to a team leader and then a manager when you’ve gained the relevant experience and skills. As you move up the ladder, you’re likely to be responsible for bigger events.

Self-employment will become an option for you once you’ve got enough experience and developed a good contact base.

What opportunities are there for career development?

A great deal of your career development will come from the experience you gain from working on projects and learning from more experienced colleagues. Some employers will also offer training opportunities, either in-house or externally.

You can join professional bodies, such as the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO), the Society of Event Organisers (SEO), the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Meetings Industry Association (MIA).
