As a retail or wholesale manager or director, you’ll be at the heart of planning and coordinating the running of a retail or wholesale store to increase business performance. Learn more about this role and what you need to study to get one by reading our career profile.
Generally, career progression comes as you gain more experience. Promotion often happens by moving to a larger store or company.
In some organisations, graduates start out by running their own department before going on to run their own store within 18 to 24 months. Once you have experience running a smaller store, you may be promoted to a managerial role.
Self-employment is also possible once you’ve gained enough experience in-store management and directing. You could open your own franchise for example, or open and manage your own independent store.
Dedicated training stores and graduate schemes are often used by bigger retail and wholesale companies. These give graduates an in-depth insight into all areas of being a store manager or director.
Training can cover anything from the technical and financial parts of the job to how to deal with staff members.
Professional organisations you could join include the British Retail Consortium and the Federation of Wholesale Distributors.
