As a photographer, audio-visual or broadcasting equipment operator, you’ll make high-quality visuals and sound for a wide range of projects. Learn more about a career in photography, audio-visual, and broadcast, find out what it involves and what you’ll need to study and do to get a role.
You’ll want to look out for training opportunities and ways to broaden your knowledge like volunteering for local organisations. As you progress you might decide to specialise in one area like forensic or wildlife photography or advertising.
Often your first role will be as an assistant, or you might start with an apprenticeship scheme. These are usually with large television or advertising corporations.
If you’re self-employed, you’ll need to focus on building a portfolio, establishing your reputation, and building a strong client base.
Once you’ve established yourself in the industry you could move into a more senior role managing an audio-visual department or photography studio.
You could also work in sound design or become a photographic agent, promoting and selling other photographers’ work.
Professional organisations you might join include: The Royal Photographic Society (RPS), The Association of Photographers (AOP) or The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).
