As a librarian, or learning resource manager, you’ll use your knowledge and skills to manage and share resources with a community. Learn more about the qualifications needed, and what the role involves.
This is a competitive career, and it’s likely you’ll need to move jobs to progress. Your first role might be as a library assistant while gaining your qualifications. As a qualified librarian, you might be promoted to a manager or a specialist subject librarian. You may also have the opportunity to do a secondment in another organisation.
Senior roles include jobs with responsibilities for a specific service or area. For example, new acquisitions or educational projects.
Continued Professional Development (CPD) will be important in your career. As digital literacy becomes more common, you’ll need to keep up with new processes and technologies. Your organisation might send you on courses to develop specific skills. You can also enrol on courses with the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).
Once you’re working in a more senior role, you could apply for professional registration of CILIP. There are three levels of professional registration: Certification, Chartership and Fellowship.
Skills you’ll get from being a librarian will help you move into different types of information management roles. For example, you could work in healthcare, local government or for a charity.
