How will your inspector of standards and regulations career progress?

Career development in this field will often be through progression in the HSE and related parts of the civil service.

Your first role in the HSE will typically be as a trainee or junior inspector. After gaining experience and completing the training pathway, you can expect to be promoted to a principal inspector role. Inspectors frequently change their industry focus, normally every three to five years, and you might consider secondments with other parts of the government.

You could also find work as a self-employed consultant in occupational health or education.

What opportunities are there for career development?

In the HSE you’ll complete a structured training programme to get a postgraduate diploma in occupational health and safety. Your training will be a combination of practical training, learning and attending events.

Joining the institution of occupational safety and health (IOSH) will offer you membership, further training, and networking opportunities.

On-the-job training and experience of different industry groups will help you gain seniority and move on to more advanced work.
