What does a nurse do?

Nurses are key in providing care and compassion that improves people’s quality of life. Become a nurse and you could help people who are unwell or need support in getting back to health.

You could work with all kinds of patients in various settings such as in an NHS or private hospital, health centre, care home, hospice or client’s home. You could be providing the care yourself, or assisting doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Your shifts may be long and busy and the work can be physically and mentally challenging. Despite this, it’s a hugely satisfying job as you’re able to help people get better. And there are always jobs, as nurses are in demand all over the world.

What will your days involve?

Daily tasks will vary but could involve:

  • Taking patients’ temperatures, pulse rates and blood pressures
  • Helping doctors with physical examinations
  • Giving patients injections and medicine
  • Cleaning and dressing wounds
  • Setting up IV drips and blood transfusions
  • Using medical equipment
  • Monitoring patient progress, keeping patient records and handing over to colleagues at the end of a shift
  • Supporting doctors and other healthcare workers with deciding what care patients need
  • Providing advice and support to patients and their relatives
