How will your medical practitioner career progress?

Once you have finished your degree and foundation training, you'll become a junior doctor and be based in a hospital. Working under the supervision of a senior doctor, you'll develop your skills and experience through conducting real-life medical treatment. After two years, you can enter into speciality training. Many doctors go on to become consultants or GPs.

Once you’ve gained a significant amount of experience, you could become self-employed as a locum doctor. This is when you’ll be employed for short periods at a variety of institutions.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Hospital-based doctors and consultants can specialise in a variety of areas such as psychiatry and paediatrics. Successful surgeons will have the chance to progress in areas like cardiothoracic, trauma and orthopaedics.

All medical practitioners in the UK are required to register with the General Medical Council (GMC).
