How will your dispensing optician career progress?

Career progression depends on your experience and career goals. If you’re interested in management, you could train and mentor new staff members. You could be promoted to a team or practice manager.

You could study for a contact lens certificate, which lets you fit and give aftercare for contact lenses. Or, you might decide to get a new role as a consultant or sales representative for a lens manufacturer.

Some dispensing opticians become self-employed and run their own optics business or franchise.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Once qualified, most learning will be on the job. You might learn skills in providing specialist services, such as for people who are partially sighted. You’ll also need to keep up with new industry-specific equipment and software.

For training opportunities and more CPD, you could join the Association of British Dispensing Opticians.
