As a dental technician, or dental technologist, you’ll use your design skills and dentistry knowledge to create and repair dental devices. Learn more about what it’s like to work in this role, what qualifications you’ll need and how your career could progress.
Generally, career progression depends on training in the areas you’re interested in. If you’ve a job with the NHS, there’s a clear career path and you’ll move up pay grades and be offered further training. After a few years, you might be promoted to a senior technician role, and then into management.
You could train to become a clinical dental technician, where you’ll get to work directly with patients. Or you could get training to specialise in areas such as maxillofacial prosthetics or orthodontics.
With enough experience, you could set up your own laboratory. Or, you might decide to move into another related area like quality control, sales or research.
You must stay registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) to continue working as a dental technician. This means you’ll need to do continued professional development (CPD). CPD could include training courses, writing journal articles or attending seminars and conferences.
Professional organisations can support you with CPD. Relevant organisations include the Dental Technologists Association (DTA) and the Orthodontic Technicians Association (OTA).
