What qualifications do you need to be a dental practitioner?

You’ll need to qualify with an approved degree in dentistry. The course is five years long, followed by up to two years of postgraduate dental training. Subjects to consider include:

Places on dentistry courses are competitive. Strong A-levels, or equivalent, in biology and chemistry will help your application.

If you already have a first degree in a related area with at least a 2:1, you could be accepted on to an accelerated four-year dental course.

Do you need a postgraduate qualification to be a dental practitioner?

You don’t need a postgraduate qualification for this job, but there are courses available which can help you to specialise once you’ve got some experience.

Examples of specialisation at postgraduate level include:

As well as experience and a strong knowledge of dentistry, you’ll need great communication skills and an enthusiastic approach to building relationships with patients and your team.

Do you need work experience to be a dental practitioner?

As dentistry courses are competitive, work experience is a great way to help your application stand out. You could contact your local practice or dental hospital to see if they’d let you shadow a dentist for a week. Or you could volunteer in a hospice, charity or care home, to show you understand what it’s like working in a care setting.

Make the most of any work experience or placement opportunity during your degree. Your engagement during uni will help show your motivation when you apply for jobs.
