How will your dental nursing career progress?

Generally, career development will take place within your workplace. Your employers may offer training so you can take on extra responsibilities. This might be taking oral impressions, doing x-rays or making models of teeth.

With experience, you could be promoted to team leader. Or, you might decide to do further training and become a dental therapist, hygienist or another role in dentistry.

Some people decide to become locum dental nurses, which means they apply for short-term roles in different settings. This lets you be more flexible with your working pattern, and sometimes get higher pay.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Much of your career development will happen on the job as you experience a variety of patients and dental issues.

You might want to do training in other areas, such as radiography or sedation, to widen your understanding of dentistry. This can also help you decide if you want to do a further qualification to move up into a different role.
