How will your programmer career progress?

Your career as a programmer will often develop in line with your technical skills and experience in certain areas.

Your first role might be as a junior programmer or graduate trainee and you’ll normally work under the supervision of a more senior programmer or software developer. With experience, you’ll take on more complex challenges and work with less supervision. As you advance you might coordinate the work of other programmers and develop a specialism.

Self-employment is common for programmers who choose to work for themselves and offer their services to clients on a per-day or per-project basis.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Continually developing your programming skills and staying informed of changes in industry practice will be very important to your success as a programmer. Graduate schemes are a popular way to help recent graduates get industry-ready quickly. You could complete your learning and training independently, through external training companies or with the help of internal training courses and peer-to-peer learning.

Institutions like BCS or IAP will also be able to offer you a variety of qualifications that are recognised across the industry and valued by employers.
