As an IT operations technician, sometimes called an IT technical (or ‘tech’) support officer, you’ll use your expertise with computer systems and customer service skills to maintain the smooth running of machines and services. Here you can find out more about what a career in this field is like, how you can get your first job and what your day-to-day role might look like.
Larger companies will usually have different teams that focus on certain areas of their systems or services, letting you build expertise in an area of your choosing.
As you advance you could take on more complex tasks or move into managerial roles. Eventually, you could direct the IT strategy of a major organisation or coordinate support services for its employees.
Self-employment is possible for experienced technicians but will likely be limited to serving smaller businesses due to the broad range of IT knowledge that you’ll need to support a larger business.
Other than training on industry-specific software, much of your learning will be on the job. Employers will often help you access external training courses to help you keep up with industry standards, many of which will be related to certain software platforms e.g., Microsoft.
Institutes like the BCS (Chartered Institute for IT) or IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) offer accredited activities leading to additional certifications.
