How will your conservation professional career progress?

Many conservation professionals get roles as environmental consultants and develop their careers through a mix of project management, surveying, data analysis and reporting.

Your early career will typically involve a lot of outdoor and site-based working. You’ll learn on the job and gain experience managing small projects, which can lead to further responsibility and larger projects later. Becoming a senior consultant is usually possible with about five years’ experience.

It’s possible to work as a freelance or self-employed consultant but you’ll need to have great experience and a broad set of skills to succeed.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Most training and skill development will be on the job. More experienced colleagues and mentors will help you develop a broad set of skills.

For many consultants, especially in larger companies, regular training opportunities and short courses can help you get specialist skills and certificates.

Experienced conservation professionals can work towards chartered membership Charted Institutes of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), or Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
