As a process engineer, also known as a chemical engineer, you’ll help turn raw materials and energy into everyday products and goods. Find out more about a career as a process engineer and what you could be doing day to day.
You might use your first process engineering job to gain experience from different projects, gaining new skills and expertise along the way. After a few years, you might be promoted to a management role, or move into research and development. Many process engineers work towards chartered status with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).
When you have enough experience, you could become self-employed and work as a consultant.
Continued professional development (CPD) will be important if you want to progress in your career. Much of your learning will be done on the job, as you increase your skills to handle the different technical challenges you work on.
Many companies offer internal training schemes for graduates to help you at the start of your career. Your employer might also offer CPD courses, or you can do courses from organisations like the IChemE.
As well as the IChemE, other professional organisations you could join include the Engineering Council and the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE).
