How will your engineering technician career progress?

Generally, career development comes with experience. The longer you do the job and the better you become, the more your career will develop.

You could start as a junior technician before gaining a couple of years of experience and applying for more senior roles. When you’ve got enough experience, you could apply for project team leader and quality control positions, for example.

Once you’ve been working for a number of years and have developed a good amount of experience and contacts, it’s possible to start working on a self-employed contractor basis.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Most learning happens on the job, under the supervision of more experienced staff. Bigger firms may also offer training courses.

Professional qualifications can also be gained. For example, CAD technicians can apply for professional registration as an EngTech.

Professional organisations you could join include the Engineering Council. You’ll be able to find other specific professional bodies through the Engineering Council, depending on the branch of engineering.
