What qualifications do you need to be a design and development engineer?

An undergraduate design engineering degree will obviously go a long way. Subject areas to consider include:

Usually, a specific undergraduate engineering degree is needed (BEng) but sometimes non-relevant degrees will also be considered.

Do you need a postgraduate qualification to be a design and development engineer?

You’ll need to complete a master’s degree (MSc, MEng) to become a fully chartered engineer. Also, if you have a non-relevant undergraduate degree, you may need to do an engineering master’s to be considered for these roles. It may not be necessary, however, to have a postgraduate qualification to get onto a graduate training scheme or to apply for entry-level roles, if you have a suitable undergraduate qualification.

As well as technical skills, you’ll need to show passion for design and a flexible approach when working in a team.

Do you need work experience to be a design and development engineer?

You’ll have a better chance of landing a job after uni in this field if you have some previous work experience. Some engineering degrees include a placement year as part of the course that will count as great work experience. Aside from this, summer internships, short-term placements and volunteering can be great examples of work experience.
