How will your civil engineer career progress?

Generally, career progression in civil engineering comes from a mixture of experience and qualifications.

You’re likely to start your career as a graduate engineer working towards chartership. Once you’ve become a chartered civil engineer you can look to quickly progress your career to a more senior level. At this stage, you may look to specialise in a certain area of civil engineering, such as buildings, the environment or transport.

Once you’ve built up a number of years of experience and knowledge it’s possible to start working on a self-employed basis.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Training is available both in-house and externally. Many employers provide structured training schemes to contribute towards chartership.

Importance is placed on continuing professional development (CPD) and organisations like the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) provide continued development opportunities such as conferences, courses and workshops.

Other professional organisations include the Engineering Council and the European Council of Civil Engineers.
