How will your human resources and industrial relations officer career progress?

At the start of your career, you’ll probably work in a general HR position doing a variety of different tasks. After a few years, you may decide to specialise in a particular area such as diversity and inclusion or employment law, for example.

Once you’ve gained several years’ experience, you could become head of HR or a recruitment consultant. You should also consider getting an accredited qualification from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD).

There’s also the option of going freelance for companies without an HR team on a short-term basis.

You’ll learn a lot on the job as a human resources and industrial relations officer, gaining more experience and confidence over time.

If you decide to go to university, you could look for a graduate scheme in human resources for a more structured experience of the industry when first starting out.
