How will your business analyst career progress?

As you start your career, you’ll gain experience researching, collecting data and analysing different kinds of projects. This might be through a graduate scheme, which usually has a strong training structure. With time, you can enter into a consultancy role and have more responsibility.

You may choose to specialise in a particular area or industry, or progress to a more senior role such as senior business analyst, director or executive.

Another option is to work as a freelancer and set up your own consultancy firm.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Your employer may offer in-house or external training opportunities, but you’ll be largely responsible for your own career growth. It's wise to spend time learning about areas like data analytics, change management and project management. You could also work towards further professional qualifications like a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Professional organisations you can join include the Institute of Consulting or the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). These provide professional development and networking opportunities.
