How will your weaver or knitter career progress?

You might use your first job to gain experience on the production floor and take advantage of on-the-job training. You could also take a short course or study a textiles degree to learn the technical aspects of knitting and weaving.

If you’re self-employed you’ll need to spend time building up a network of contacts, promoting yourself and developing your skills. Many self-employed knitters and weavers use social media to promote and sell their products. The Design Trust and Crafts Council offer resources and training opportunities to help get you started.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Once you have experience in weaving and knitting you could become a supervisor or work in quality control.

You might decide to move into fabric technology or the design side of the process which usually involves additional training. You could also look at teaching your skills to others.

Professional organisations you might consider joining include The Textile Institute, The Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers and The UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT).
