As a veterinary nurse you’ll use your passion for care and specialist training to work closely with veterinary surgeons, supporting the health and wellbeing of a variety of animals. Learn more about working as a veterinary nurse, find out what’s involved and what you’ll need to study and do to get into the field.
You’ll start by being accredited as a registered veterinary nurse (RVN) and gaining experience as you work in different practices or hospitals. After some time, you could consider specialising in areas like rehabilitation, diagnostics or anaesthesia. You could also progress to more senior roles like practice manager or clinical coach, allowing you to supervise and train new veterinary nurses.
There are also progression opportunities outside of veterinary practices such as moving into research, education, or commercial sectors like animal pharmaceuticals or nutrition.
As a registered nurse with the Royal Collect of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), you’ll need to complete 15 hours of professional development each year. This is a great way to keep your knowledge and skills current through lectures, courses and research activity.
RCVS also offers graduate and postgraduate certificate courses that you can complete to evidence your experience.
You can join the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) to access further support and resources.
