How will your veterinarian career progress?

After graduating with a degree approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), you have to complete a professional development phase (PDP). This helps you progress from university into a professional job.

You’ll undergo continuous professional development (CPD) throughout your career. CPD helps you keep your skills and knowledge up to date.

Over time you will gain more experience and can become an expert in certain animals or medical areas. Many vets go on to open their own veterinary practices.

What opportunities are there for career development?

You can specialise in the treatment of certain animals or medical areas, such as epidemiology or anaesthesia. To specialise, you take an RCVS-approved postgraduate degree course.

Other opportunities include moving into teaching or research at a university or research institution. Alternatively, the knowledge and experience you will have as a vet could help you move into a role within environmental conservation.

You can join the RCVS and be listed on their Register of Members when you're qualified. To remain on this list, you have to renew your membership each year.
