How will your chartered or certified accountant career progress?

Your career as a chartered accountant will probably involve working at a public practice accounting firm to gain a CA or ACA qualification before choosing to remain there or moving on.

In your early career you’ll work as you train to get your accountancy certification and will spend parts of the working week studying for exams. Secondments in other parts of the business or abroad are common. As you gain experience you could progress to manager level and eventually become a partner in an accountancy firm.

Working for yourself is possible with experience, particularly in areas like tax where individuals and small businesses frequently need accountancy services.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Your career development in accounting is centred around continuing professional development (CPD). This means that you’ll likely be required to be a member of a professional body and complete regular learning and training to stay up to date with changes in the industry.

Many employers in this field offer internal training to help you meet these requirements. You might choose to complete specialist training to help you move into a certain accounting niche.
