University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I am currently going into my fourth year at Loughborough following a placement year. I have had the best possible time, and met friends which I will keep for life. I have been provided with countless opportunities to further develop myself, and I could even have taken part in more to get as much as i could out of the experience. Even being in my final year, I am not bored of Loughborough - in fact, I do not look forward to my last week, as I am sure it is going to be an emotional one!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
There are so many different types of halls/accommodation available to students in any year of their degree - as with every university however, there is never going to be enough to accommodate everyone's first choice.
In terms of educational resources, we have the library and other buildings on campus which can be used for studying or group coursework meetings. Overall these facilities are amazing.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Loughborough support is excellent, there is always someone there for you, and every student is given a personal tutor in their department who they can go to for advice. More recently, a peer mentor system has been set up where current students are buddied up with freshers to help them with any queries they may have in their first year.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The student's union is great, with events provided daily for everyone to get involved. In terms of nights out, there are 3 nights available, with special events sometimes being held on extra days of the week (e.g. DBE or Abba). There are also a number of 'sober night' activities on offer regular, including dancing lessons and roller discos.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Loughborough is a small town, mainly built upon university students. It doesn't have the best 'city life', but it has everything a student needs within walking distance - there are even some good bars/clubs which are good for different days of the week!
If city life is important however, Nottingham and Leicester are only around 20mins away on the train!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Loughborough is a huge sports University, and has the best facilities for any sport you may be interested in (the 50m pool is my favourite!). There is also an extensive list of societies which you can join, including a number of charities, cocktail society and the economics society.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I enjoy the optional modules we have available on my specific course - there is a lot of flexibility if you wish to change modules/courses early on, and there are a wide range of modules to choose from.
However, lectures in general can be dull. It is difficult to sit for 2 hours and listen to someone talk at you. Even though some lecturers try and encourage interaction, this doesn't always go down well as people are not willing to participate in the larger lectures.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
12
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Within the school of Business and Economics, we have a placement/graduate opportunities team. As students, we get regular updates informing us of employer events on campus, as well as job offers that become available from employers lined to the university. As well as this, we have access to an online portal which shows all of the positions available, and provides links to the application process.
The department also hold drop in sessions where they help students to improve their CV and cover letter.
