University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I can't recommend this university highly enough. It is one of the few places that ask you questions instead of just giving you answers. The teaching staff come from a wide range of backgrounds, the facilites offer you the space and quality to grow as a musician, and the course itself (BA Hons Music (Production)) allows you to take control of what you want to do.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The studios are of a great standard, and I have heard that over the summer they opened 2 more, as well as giving the whole college a face lift!
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
One of the key phrases I heard throughout my time at LCoM was "Don't bury your head in the sand", and the support was always there if you felt like you needed to.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
When I started the SU was thin on the ground, but by my final year some great students had taken control and were offering good nights and events that were cheap, fun and a great addition to student life.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
You need to have visited Leeds to see what this city has to offer. For live music events there are at least 30 venues that offer every style, as well as the West Yorkshire Playhouse right next door to the college putting on a range of shows. The centre is thiving, and the college is just a stones throw away from all the action.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
As a small college it is lacking in this department, but they do have a deal with the local sports centre offering a different activity every day of the week. There are, of course, also a range of bands and orchestras that you can audition for each year, but outside this there are no sports teams or societies.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The staff are switched on and engaged with the industry and can really help you get to where you want to be, once again, if you really want to be somewhere. Instead of telling you what you should be doing, they help you grow as a musician, and a person, to allow you to find your own path and make your own creative decisions in a professional setting.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
In all honesty, careers in the music industry seem far and few between, but Leeds College Of Music showed me the many pathways I can take. In this industry you have to put in the extra hours to get what you want from it, but the univeristy helps set you up if you really do want it.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Leeds has great student accommodation, and the college is attached to Joesph Stone House, student halls that are a little too small to house all the first years. They are starting to feel a little worn, but are great compared to some of the other accommodation offered by other universities.
