For me, the textiles and surface design course is amazing! The staff are very supportive, friendly and are very knowledgeable with industry experience. Throughout the three year course they help prepare us for industry and support us to find jobs. We get taught both traditional and digital techniques throughout the course which teaches you everything you need to know for industry, the course is very suited for industry and could not recommend more if you have an interest for fashion, interiors, gift etc. On a personal note I have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this course and I am so pleased I chose the Northern school of art as the advantaged far outweigh any negatives (if there are any). Although this is a small university, its facilities are amazing which makes the opportunity for accessing all facilities easy and gaining access to the lectures is far easier compared to the bigger universities.

A very warm and welcoming atmosphere from day 1 makes it very easy to settle in and enjoy getting into the varied and interesting course modules , which are fun and informative whilst testing and developing your creativity to the max . Some of these modules do involve a lot of writing in the creation of 'process books' which can feel like a distraction from your active drawing & painting at times but still allows for creative ideas for layouts and design and can be a useful addition for future use in your CV and promoting your work ( the course is 'For Commercial Application' after all ).
Lecturers are all approachable and helpful even if you're not directly working with them on your chosen course and you are encouraged throughout to collaborate with different departments.
The equipment and facilities available are top class although the location of some of these around the spread out campus can sometimes prove a little inconvenient ( hardly a major concern ).
Location is good for access with rail station on campus, lots of car parking availability and close to local shopping centre, It's also within easy walking distance of the local beach and marina which is a nice bonus !

The course is very good for focusing on and developing your place in the commercial artistic world and should prove a great help for future progression ( we all have to make a living so best to do it with something you love doing ! ). From a personal view point this does sometimes feel like it's drawing ( no pun intended) you away from the practical artwork at times , this may be due to the fact that I'm predominantly an analogue artist and am happiest with traditional drawing and painting, although this course has greatly developed my previously very limited digital skills !
Classroom sessions are generally informative and interesting whilst remaining fun to partake in and the uni Moodle platform always provides detailed workshop documents for reference and catch-up.
The lecturers and tech assistants are usually very happy to make themselves available for help/assistance even if not during scheduled class time.
The classrooms/studios etc are in the main well equipped and bright and airey although, again from a personal perspective , they are very digital orientated and lacking in space for working at a painting easel ( but I am in the minority so can usually create a space ).
There seems to be very good links and networking with industry professionals and institutions to try and provide the platforms to progress into the working art world after uni .
Overall so far ( I'm just starting final year ) the course does exactly what it says on the tin, and does it in a very enjoyable and fun way !
