Bournemouth University offers a perfect balance between tranquillity and excitement. Personally, I love it here because it’s much calmer than other cities, making it ideal for academic life. Coming from an East Coast background (Tanzania), I also appreciate being near the beach—especially in summer, when Bournemouth truly comes to life. The only downside of my university experience so far has been feeling homesick as an international student. However, I’m grateful for SUBU and its many societies and clubs, which have helped me connect with people from similar backgrounds.

The best aspects of my Communication and Media (Hons) course are its strong focus on practical work, allowing students to gain hands-on experience. Plus, the placement opportunities available are quite exciting. The most challenging part of the course is the 10,000-word dissertation in the final year, which can be quite daunting.

I’d say the halls are quite spacious, especially the rooms—even in an en-suite, you get good value for the space. The only downside is sharing the kitchen, especially if you have messy flatmates. What I love most about our halls is that they’re all-inclusive, so once you’ve paid rent, you don’t have to worry about any extra costs.

Overall, my Bournemouth University experience has been transformative. The MSc Computer Science programme blends solid theoretical grounding with practical, project-based learning, and the facilities on Talbot Campus – modern computer labs, ample study spaces, and robust IT support – have been instrumental to my progress. The campus culture at BU is collaborative and inclusive, with active coding clubs and hackathons that broadened my professional network. Career services and industry talks at BU have given me clear pathways into the tech field, including internships and project briefs from local tech partners. On the downside, the MSc workload can be intense, and at times access to tutoring or wellbeing services is not immediate during peak periods. A few administrative processes also moved more slowly than ideal, adding stress during busy terms. If I could suggest improvements, I’d advocate for more frequent small-group seminars and earlier practical projects within core modules, expanded tutoring hours for MSc students, and better alignment of industry projects with student interests such as AI, cybersecurity, and software engineering. I’d also welcome more reservable quiet study spaces on Talbot Campus and extended lab access evenings and weekends. Overall, the experience has strengthened my technical skills, resilience, and network, preparing me well for a career in computer science.
