The industry connections and knowledge gained at BIMM are incredible, and the courses are very much focussed on ensuring a successful career in the music industry (rather than just teaching the required technical skills in order to get a degree). The only downside is a lack of resources unrelated to the course available to students - bigger unis will have a campus, student halls, student union, a GP, catering, shops etc. However, the absence of these resources does help students become more self-sufficient, and actually gain experience in adult life instead of relying on the uni for everything, so personally I see it as an upside. BIMM is not a place for those who want to be handheld and rely on others for their career and education, or don’t want to take music seriously. But it is excellent for those dedicated to having a successful career in the music industry.

There are no boring ‘lectures’ in this course - every class is engaging, personal and practical. They feel more like a conversation than a lecture, with small class sizes and opportunities for student input at every opportunity. Every lecturer has been great so far, and I’ve learned so much about music production and areas of music that I’d never looked into before, such as recording. There is plenty of practical studio experience with high-end industry standard equipment, as well as learning for a home studio environment. You’re also able to book studio space for your own personal use, free of extra cost. The optional modules in Year 2 and 3 are a great way to tailor your education for your specific career choice.

Brighton is my favourite city in England, by far. So vibrant and welcoming. I don’t drink or go to clubs, but I’ve heard the night life is very good. Even if you aren’t into that, there’s still so much to do, with a lovely seafront and parks. In general, people here are friendly and helpful - including the pigeons.
