The most meaningful aspect of my university experience has been the transformation in how I understand both the world and myself. Studying Social Work has not simply been about acquiring knowledge, but about confronting uncomfortable realities, questioning my assumptions, and recognising my role within wider social structures. I have become more reflective, more aware of inequality, and more conscious of the ethical responsibility that comes with supporting vulnerable individuals. Engaging in discussions with peers and applying theory to real-life practice during placement has made the learning deeply personal. It has helped me move from passive understanding to active professional formation. At the same time, this journey has also been emotionally and intellectually demanding. There were moments when I questioned my capability, particularly when faced with critical feedback or when observing the complexity of people’s lived experiences in practice. Social work education requires emotional presence, critical thinking, and resilience all at once, which can feel overwhelming. Balancing academic expectations with placement responsibilities sometimes left me feeling stretched and uncertain. However, these challenges have been the most valuable teachers. They forced me to slow down, reflect, and develop resilience and self-discipline. I learned that growth often comes with discomfort, and that uncertainty is part of becoming a competent and ethical practitioner. Looking back, both the rewarding and difficult aspects have shaped my confidence, strengthened my professional identity, and affirmed my commitment to social work. This experience has not only prepared me academically, but has fundamentally changed how I see my purpose and contribution to society.

The best aspect of my course has been the interactive and reflective nature of the teaching. The in-person lectures and seminars create a supportive learning environment where I feel comfortable contributing to discussions and exploring complex topics in depth. I particularly value the lecturers’ openness and approachability. They encourage critical thinking and reflection rather than simply delivering content, which has helped me develop confidence in expressing my ideas and applying theory to practice. The blended learning approach, including online resources and independent study, has also been useful in allowing me to revisit materials and learn at my own pace. This flexibility has supported my understanding and enabled me to take ownership of my learning. The most challenging aspect has been the variability in contact hours and the level of independent learning required. While independent study has helped me grow academically, there were times when the reduced structured contact made it difficult to gauge whether I was progressing at the expected level. Balancing coursework, placement preparation, and self-directed learning required strong time management and discipline, which was initially challenging to adjust to. However, this experience has ultimately strengthened my independence and resilience. It has encouraged me to become more proactive in seeking clarification, managing my workload, and engaging more deeply with the material. Overall, the course has supported both my academic and personal development, and has prepared me with the critical thinking, self-awareness, and professional skills necessary for my future career.

The best aspects of uni life is the amazing student support service, including faith and reflection and the kind staff. I wish gym membership was included in the fees, as they are an expensive optional extra.

The course is almost entirely in-person, I wouldn't mind a mixture of blended learning. It's good because we learn the content and then can put it into practice on placement.

Bournemouth is an expensive place to privately rent. Parts of Bournemouth don't feel the safest at night, but that's like anywhere.
